The AI Image Generator Guide

Before you pay for a picture machine, read the label.
The guide

How to choose an AI image generator

There are dozens of tools that turn words into pictures. They differ less in the pictures than in the rules around them.

Most people pick an image generator the way they pick a font: by the first sample that looks good. Then the questions arrive. May I use this in an ad? Can it spell the words on the sign? Will it make the same character twice? What does one more image cost when the free ones run out?

This guide is built around those questions. It does not crown a winner. It lists what to check, explains why each point matters, and gives you a scorecard to fill in for the tools on your own shortlist.

The pictures look alike. The licences, the limits and the prices do not.

Seven things to check

In the order they tend to surprise people.

Commercial use

Who owns the output, and may you use it in ads, products and client work? Read the terms, not the landing page.

Text in the image

Signs, labels, posters: some models spell well, some invent letters. Test a sentence you need.

Consistency

Can it keep a character, a product or a style the same across many images?

Editing

Fixing one hand without re-rolling the whole picture: inpainting, outpainting, masks.

Size and upscaling

The largest output, and whether upscaling adds detail or only pixels.

API and automation

If images are part of a product, you need an API, its limits, and its price per call.

The real price per image

Credits, subscriptions and re-rolls: divide what you pay by the images you keep.

Your scorecard

Copy it, fill one column per tool on your shortlist.
